Reading Reflection 3

I decided to read another novel from the second reading list. This time, I read Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck.

1) The general theme is well stated in the first chapter of the book. The general idea is that since the beginning of time, people have had differing mindsets. It is these differences that breed success in some and failure in others. It is not necessarily that one mindset is right over another, it is more what you do with the mindset that you sway towards. You can change your mindset, and this ability, which everyone posses is the key to success because you can shift your mindset to given needs at any point.

2) In my opinion, the book greatly reflected what we learn about in class. In class we have learned that the right mindset is everything to a successful entrepreneur. This book will argue that if you gear your mindset towards accomplishing your goals at all cost then anything is possible. This is almost a direct correlation to what we have learned in numerous lessons of this class.

3) I would most definitely design an assignment geared around what I read in this book. I would assign a mindset exercise, essentially a mindset road map. I would assign a outline of what the student's mindset should be at different developing points of their opportunity, and how they would alter that mindset given a new task or a new obstacle in their path.

4) My biggest surprise moment from the book has to be when the author says that one's mindset, even if that person has had it since birth, can be changed and altered multiple times over. I have always been a proponent of someone's innate mindset defining them and them having to use that mindset in the best way they see fit. I find it extremely surprising that the author says that most people alter their mindset in fact. She is the PhD, not me!

  1. Nick,

This book is similar based off your second answer to my reading reflection. My reflection mentioned how if you follow a system, you will be able to accomplish more and be better off. I think this relates to your book because of how you mentioned about people's mindsets and how they can change. If you follow a system rather than a goal, you will be better off if your mindset changes and you want to do something else. You can carry some things from that "system" with you for your next thought.
